Snorkeling at Cayo Largo

Cayo Largo is a small paradise for snorkels. A long coral reef, accessible by boat, along the south-western sector of the island. A refuge for thousands of fish of all kinds. The snorkeling is the number one activity for the catamaran day-cruise. This is why we always book this tour every time we go to Cayo Largo.

When the sea is calm, it is possible to make snorkeling in front of the Villa Soledad hotel. There are splendid coral bouquets, several fish species and even tortoises, if you are lucky! The best spot to enter the sea is the western footbridge.

For many years, we take underwater photographs with a digital camera and its casing (40 m). The results are a lot better than disposable cameras but still a bit tricky to aim the subject, especially if the sea is rough. We are in third generations of underwater cameras. For people who does not have their own equipments, it is possible to get fins, mask and tuba at the nautical center of your hotel. It is included in your travel package for one hour per day (or so!)

If you like to be surrounded by fishes, do not forget to bring an empty bottle of water that you filled with bread (from the buffet). It is easier to feed the fishes without your fingers gets bitten!

As everywhere on the planet, the corals are victims of climate warming, but also of tourist activity. Although Cayo Largo is a place of predilection for diving, we see many dead or damaged corals. The most recent enemy on the list… solar lotions!

We visited several places where it is possible to make excellent snorkeling like Jibacoa, Cuba and Roatan, Honduras. These two places have one thing in common... the proximity of the corals to the beach. No need to take a catamaran to go for snorkeling!
