Renovating a « palapas » roof at Villa Lindamar

During our stay in Dec. 2008, we had the chance to withness how Cubans replace the roof of the huts of Villa Lindamar. There are made of dried palm leaves called « palapas ».

Here are the steps:

   Dec. 19th, 2008

The roof of the hut 7053 (on left) has been completely renovated. It is now time for the next one... 7052.

Workers do not only change the leaves of the roof but the whole structure too!

A worker pull a cable to force the old roof to go down without touching the other hut.

At 17h, the roof is now totally removed.

Gone bald the 7052!

   Dec. 21st, 2008 17h

The vertical beams are in place.

There were four workers for this task and... a single hammer! Others used logs!!!!!

   Dec. 22nd, 2008 17h

The horizontal beams are almost quite settled.

The red color of the photo results from the magnificent sunset of this day.

   Dec. 23rd, 2008 17h

Beams are in place, they are to cover the whole structure with "palapas", dried leaves of palm trees.

   Dec. 24th, 2008 17h

Voila! The roof is almost completely. There is only a wooden facade to be completed.

Good workl!

Now... 51 more huts to go :o)

*** ATTENTION *** Especially in Playa Sirena we will find starfishes. These beautiful creatures are alive and die when exposed to air. For respect to marine life, do not take them out of the water. This applies to any other marine species. Remember there are fines of over $ 300 if you get caught in your luggage, corals and other marine species. Be respectful. It will be a shame to see them disappear.

This is the return of pelicans in Cayo Largo, who had left the island since Hurricane Michelle in November 2001. What a pleasure to watch them dive for delicious fishes :o)
