Villa Iguana (adult-only, 18+)
(formerly Villa Iguana-Capricho)

This hotel reopens in november 2016, and is the first adult-only hotel in Cayo Largo. It was partially destroyed by hurricane Michelle on November 4, 2001, and after the hurricane the salvageable rooms were occupied by hotels’ employees. In 2012 they began a big project to refurbish the Villa Iguana and expend it with the addition of several 2-storey wooden bungalows. It’s located on the eastern side of the hotel zone, between the hotel Isla del Sur and the hotel Playa Banca. Some of the new Bungalows occupy the area where the old hotel Villa Capricho was located, the latter was completely destroyed by hurricane Michelle.

  History

  • Before 2001, the Villa Iguana was part of what was called «La Isla todo incluido», at that time tourists could eat and drink in all the restaurants and bars of the island. This shared-services policy was abolished after the opening of the Sol Cayo Largo.
  • The Villa Iguana was heavily damaged by hurricane Michelle on Nov. 4, 2001.
  • For more than 10 years after the hurricane, the salvageable rooms were occupied by hotels’ employees.
  • From 2012 to 2016, the hotel was refurbished and several new rooms (wooden cabanas) were added. A new beach ranchon was also built.
  • The hotel reopens in November 2016.
