North & East part of Cayo Largo
The best way to discover the hidden parts of Cayo Largo is to rent a scooter or jeep. There is only one paved road which connect the hotels (south) to the village (northeast), but in the middle of the island there are also a few other small paths (going mostly from East to West). One of this path goes to the magnificent beaches at the West end of the island (Playa Paraiso and Playa Sirena). When riding north and east we could discover the following places ...
Going North:
Playa Luna, a virgin beach on the northwest of the island. To go there you have to cross the pig farm of the island. Make a little stop there, these workers do not see tourists often and will be happy to give a tour of the installation. We met Rolando and Miguel. They were very friendly but they went back to the main island. By the way, if you gifts, it is a good time to give. Say Hi to Miguel from Lily and Normand!
At the intersection with the main paved road, you can see the small fire house and the power plant (generators completely renovated in 2008). A bit nosy but far from the hotels. The same road going to Playa Luna and the piggery.
Going East:
The road to the virgin beaches. The road which is behind the hotel zone continues eastward in a path which goes all the way to the tip of the island. You will pass by the huge communication tower (at Playa Blanca), and then you can drive (or ride) for another 20-30 minute up to a big sign which says: « No jeep-No Dune Buggy-No scooter ». You can then continue by foot on the path (soft sand) or by the beach (easier). Around there the island is quite narrow (~1 km), so you will be able to also catch a glimpse of the north side with its lush vegetation, nice mangrove and beautiful lagoons.
If you enjoy walking on you can try to reach Playa Los Cocos and Playa Tortugas, the last beaches on the east side. It's about a 2½-3 hour walk after the "No Jeep" sign. On these virgin beaches, you can really enjoy the unique feeling of being all alone in the world!
North of Playa Los Cocos and Tortuga, there is a nice pine forest and ruins of an old house now the home of termites. Thus place gives natural shade, BUT you have to be a good runner because mosquitos are very aggressive. Can you imagine people used to live there?
Playa Luna - virgin beach with some Mangrove swamps

Road towards east of island. Here around Playa Los Cocos
